I had the wonderful opportunity to team up with the local Relay for Life committee for their kick-off party this past week. I decided to go with flavors inspired by classic ice cream flavors.

Neopolitan Cupcakes

Chocolate, White, and Pink Strawberry batter layers and topped off with a strawberry cream cheese frosting, chocolate chips, and a marshmallow fondant strawberry.

Rocky Road Cupcakes

Chocolate batter with peanuts, marshmallows and chocolate chips with marshmallow buttercream and a fondant cherry on top.

Mint Chip Cupcakes

Mint flavored chocolate cupcakes with mint chips stirred in the batter, mint cream cheese frosting with mini chocolate chips, and a fondant leaf on top.

Rainbow Sherbet Cupcakes

Orange, Lime, and Raspberry batters layered to give a tye-dye appearance with Neon raspberry buttercream on top.

Relay for Life is such a wonderful organization. The volunteers I met were incredible. Be sure and participate in the 2012 Relay for Life.

Little Chickadee Preschool

Graduation!

For the last 3 years I have had the opportunity to make cupcakes for the Little Chickadee Preschool Graduation. It has been so much fun coming up with new and creative ways to make little chicks out of cupcakes.

This year I made Confetti Cupcakes with butter-cream frosting. The chickadee is made all of frosting except their eyes and beaks. The eyes are M&Ms and the beaks are made of DOTS candies.

I have a new toy that I absolutely LOVE! I got a mold for chocolate buttons and I can make them in any color! I also have a new mini two tier cake pan. This cake shows both of them! For 1 year and a 1/2 now, my nephew Carson has been asking for a Buzz Lightyear cake. Well, last year we were out of town on his birthday, and then things got busy and we never got it made. Ever since, every time someone has a birthday he reminded me again, that he didn't get his Buzz cake. This year I finally came through!!

This is a chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and decorated with frosting. The craters were all made with frosting also. Buzz, is an action figure. I have found that kids love having a cake with something they can keep after the party is over. This is a great way to have an awesome cake, and still have a toy to show for it.

I had a request on how to make 3D cupcakes so I thought I would share with everyone.

Make whatever it is you want out of fondant/gum paste. Attach wire to the fondant and let it dry for atleast 24 hours. I used floral wire when I made these butterflies. If you want to use floral wire be sure to double it and twist it so it is stronger.

This is a Amoxicillin cake... yes, you heard me correctly. I work in a pharmacy for my day job what can I say? We have had an intern named Brent working in our store for the last 6 weeks. Today was his last day working with us, he is heading back to North Dakota for the rest of pharmacy school. This is a yellow/funfetti cake with buttercream frosting. The medicine bottle is rice crispy treats covered in fondant, and the PINK medicine is also fondant.

My sister's family got a WII for Christmas and ever since her boys have been so excited about all the games. My nephew Ethan decided he wanted a Mario Cart cake for his birthday this year.

I found these figurines at Toys R Us on the Pokemon isle. I brought them home and made them carts to ride in. This cake is frosted with Wilton orange decorator icing and the carts are covered in fondant.

This cake is a chocolate cake with raspberry filling. The legs of the spider are pretzels and the whole cake is covered in chocolate.

Three White Dresses

In my church there are three important events that almost every female experiences. The first is their blessing day when they are given their name and their blessing. The second is when they are baptized and become official members of our church. The third is when we are married. The girls youth group did an activity tonight focusing on these three important events, and asked me to make these cakes.

Happy Birthday Elena Pearl!!

Today my youngest is two years old!! I can hardly believe how time flies when you're having fun!! Since I have to work my day job today, and I already have another cake to finish today. (as you will see later) We decided that we would celebrate her birthday early. Friday we went swimming and Sunday we had a party with Elena's cousins.

Elena loves kitties, so her cake had to be a kitty! This is a two layer chocolate cake with buttercream frosting. All the decorating was also done with Buttercream except the eyes, they were M&Ms.

It was so fun eating cake and ice cream with our family for Elena's birthday!

Ghouly Cupcakes

This is another great recipe/idea from foodnetwork.com. I love how they used the candy eyes to make this simple cupcake look more spooky. It is little things like this that make the holidays that much better!

Ingredients

Cupcakes:

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1/2 cup root beer, flat
1/3 cup unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1/4 cup sour cream
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Frosting:

8 large egg whites
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 pinch fine salt
1 teaspoon banana extract, or more to taste
1 to 2 drops pastel food coloring, optional
Candied eyeballs

Directions

Equipment: 12 cup standard muffin tin

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line standard muffin tins with cupcake liners or spray footed cupcake holders with nonstick spray.

Put the butter, root beer, and cocoa in a microwave-safe bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and microwave on HIGH until the butter melts, about 2 minutes. Whisk to combine.

Meanwhile, whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl. Whisk the sour cream, eggs, and vanilla together in a small bowl.

Whisk the hot cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir in the sour cream mixture just to combine; take care not to overmix. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared muffin cups, filling each one about 3/4 of the way full, about 1/4 cup per cupcake. Bake cupcakes until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Cool the cupcakes completely in the tin on a rack. Remove from liners and return cakes to a rack.

For Frosting: Bring a few inches of water to a boil in a saucepan that can hold a mixer's bowl above the water. Whisk the egg whites, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt in the bowl by hand. Set the bowl above the boiling water and continue whisking until the mixture is hot to the touch and the sugar dissolves, about 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a standing mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and beat at medium-high speed until eggs beat up into a cool stiff meringue, about 5 minutes. Add a few drops of desired extract and/or food coloring and lightly beat into the meringue.

To decorate: Using a spoon, offset spatula or piping bag, dollop, spread or pipe about 1/2 cup meringue on top of each cupcake to make a ghost or monster of your choice. Decorate with candied eyeballs or other candies. These can be finished 2 to 3 hours in advance and held at room temperature.

CANDY CORN PARFAIT

This is a very sophisticated treat taken from the very festive idea of candy corn. The original idea came from foodnetwork.com and I really liked the concept. However, my image centered mind thinks that this would look more like a candy corn if it was made in a martini glass with the layers being more even. That's my two cents, take it with a grain of salt and make this great recipe.

Ingredients

1 large orange
1 to 2 tablespoons orange liqueur
3 tablespoons lemon curd
1/4 cup whipped cream
1 tablespoon crushed shortbread cookies (optional)

Directions

Peel and segment the orange with a paring knife, removing the membranes and white pith. Chop the segments and toss with the orange liqueur in a bowl; set aside for about 10 minutes.

Spoon the lemon curd into a small liqueur glass or brandy snifter in an even layer. Top with a thin layer of whipped cream, then pile on the oranges and dollop with the remaining whipped cream. Sprinkle with crushed shortbread cookies, if desired.

Here is another great idea from familyfun.go.com that would be great party favor for your next Creepy Crawly Spider Party or to hand out for Trick or Treaters. These are so easy it's crazy!

Materials

Black pipe cleaners
Lollipops

Googly eyes
Glue

Instructions
Holding all four pipe cleaners, center them at the base of the pop and wrap them around the stick once so there are four legs on each side.
Bend the pipe cleaner ends to form eight feet.
Glue on googly eyes.

PECAN-CARAMEL SPIDERS

When I first saw the picture of these spider treats, I was so impressed! They look so real and creepy I couldn't wait to see how they were made. The recipe came from foodnetwork.com.

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups toasted pecans
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, in pieces
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 ounces thin black licorice strands, cut into 2-inch pieces
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped
Chocolate curls or jimmies, optional
Directions
Line 2 baking sheets with waxed paper and lightly spray with nonstick spray. Mound 30 small clusters of pecans, about 3 or 4 pecans each, spaced a couple inches apart on the pan.
Make caramel: Warm the cream over low heat and keep warm while you cook the sugar.
Put the sugar and corn syrup and in a deep, heavy-bottomed large saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Stop stirring, raise heat to medium-high, and simmer until the sugar reaches the hard crack stage, or 305 degrees F on a candy thermometer, about 7 minutes.
Whisk the butter and salt into the sugar mixture. Gradually pour in the cream and vanilla taking care since the mixture will bubble up. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar reaches soft ball stage, 240 degrees F on the thermometer, about 5 minutes more. Immediately remove from the heat and cool for a minute.
Ladle a couple tablespoons of warm caramel over some of the nut clusters, to make the spider bodies. Then press 6 pieces of licorice into the warm caramel to make the legs. Repeat with the remaining caramel and licorice. (It's helpful to have an extra hand here, since the caramel can set quickly. If caramel hardens, warm over very low heat. ) Let spiders cool 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, put the chocolates in a medium heatproof bowl. Bring a saucepan filled with 1-inch or so of water to a very slow simmer; set the bowl over, but not touching, the water. Stir the chocolate occasionally until melted and smooth. (Alternatively, put the chocolate in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Melt at 50 percent power in the microwave until soft, about 1 minute. Stir, and continue heat until completely melted, 2 to 3 minutes more.)
Spoon about 1 tablespoon of melted chocolate on top of each spider. Sprinkle with jimmies or chocolate curls, if desired. Let cool until firm.

As I have been looking for ideas for the blog I have found tons of ideas for treats that look like spiders. So, we are going to dedicate an entire week to creepy spider treats and the crawly spider webs.

This first recipe I found at familyfun.go.com. It would be great for any party for young or old!

Spider Pretzels

These arachnid treats are easy to make and they look positively lifelike crawling across your child's snack plate.

For each:

2 round crackers
2 teaspoons smooth peanut butter
8 small pretzel sticks
2 raisins

With the peanut butter, make a cracker sandwich. Insert eight pretzel "legs" into the filling. With a dab of peanut butter, set two raisin "eyes" on top. Makes 1.

Ghostly Pumpkin Pudding

This is a really cute idea that I found on foodnetwork.com. The pudding is a lot like pumpkin pie, but the topping is so cute and gives it a personal touch. These would be the perfect dessert for a dinner party.

Ingredients

Pudding:

1 package gelatin
2 cups whole milk
1 cup sugar
6 large egg yolks (reserve 2 whites for topping)
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1 (15-ounce) can pure pumpkin puree

Topping:

2 large egg whites
1/3 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 pinch fine salt
Small candy, for eyes

For pudding:

Directions

Put 1 tablespoon of cold water in a large bowl. Sprinkle gelatin over the surface, do not stir, and set aside until gelatins softens and blooms

Bring a few inches of water to a boil in a saucepan that can hold a stand mixer's bowl above the water. Whisk milk, sugar, yolks, cinnamon and salt in a heat-proof bowl. Set the bowl above the boiling water and cook, stirring constantly with a heat-proof spatula, until mixture begins to thicken and coats the back of a spoon and almost boils, 10 to 12 minutes. Immediately remove from the heat and pour over the gelatin, whisking constantly until gelatin is completely dissolved and evenly distributed. Whisk in pumpkin until combined and completely smooth.

Evenly divide mixture into 12 small 3-ounce cups (paper works fine) and refrigerate until set, about 4 to 8 hours.

For topping:

Bring a few inches of water to a boil in a saucepan that can hold a stand mixer's bowl above the water. Whisk the 2 egg whites, sugar, cream of tarter, and salt in the bowl by hand. Set the bowl above the boiling water and continue whisking until the mixture is hot to the touch and the sugar dissolves, about 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer bowl to mixer and beat with the whisk attachment at medium-high speed until eggs hold a stiff peak, about 5 minutes.

Spoon topping onto puddings in the shape of a ghost. Decorate with candy eyes and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Pumpkin Pancakes w/ Cider Syrup

Although Pumpkin Pancakes might not be the most creative recipe that you can find with pumpkin in it, it is one of my absolute favorites. Especially with the cider syrup. If you don't have pumpkin pancakes in either October or November you aren't having the FULL harvest experience!! For me the cider syrup is what makes this recipe. Try it, I KNOW you'll love it!

Ingredients:

2 1/3 Bisquick baking mix

2 Tbsp brown sugar (packed)

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp ginger

1 1/4 c milk

2 eggs

1/3 c mashed pumpkin

1/4 c vegetable oil

Beat all ingredients with a whisk or hand beater until well blended. Poor batter onto hot, lightly greased griddle or skillet.

Cider Syrup

1/2 c white sugar

1 Tbsp cornstarch

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 c apple cider

1 Tbsp lemon juice

2 Tbsp butter

Stir together sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon in a saucepan. Stir in the apple cider and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until mixture begins to boil; boil until the syrup thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the butter until melted. Serve warm.

*We did not have apple cider so the syrup in the picture was actually made with Orange-Pineapple juice. But, it was oh so good!*

Pumpkin Caramels
This recipe sounds similar to the pumpkin fudge, but it is rich caramels instead. The recipe came from foodnetwork.com. If you would like more pointers on this recipe check out the original.

Ingredients
1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds
1 cup maple syrup
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup dark corn syrup
1 teaspoon pumpkin or apple pie spice
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
2/3 cup canned pumpkin puree, room temperature
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Special equipment: Candy thermometer

Directions
Line an 8 by 4 inch loaf pan with waxed paper or aluminum foil. Brush the sides, but not the bottom lightly with butter and sprinkle the pumpkin seeds in the bottom.
Whisk the maple syrup, brown sugar, cream, corn syrup, pie spice, lemon juice, and salt together in a heavy bottomed medium saucepan. Brush down the sides on the saucepan with water to remove every grain of sugar. Set the candy thermometer into the sugar. Cook the mixture over medium heat, without stirring, until the mixture reaches the firm ball stage, 248 degrees F, about 18 to 20 minutes.
Carefully stir in the pumpkin puree. Return to the heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the caramel reaches the soft ball stage, 240 degrees F, about 15 minutes more. Remove from the heat and stir in butter and vanilla.
Pour the caramel over the pumpkin seeds in the prepared pan. Smooth to an even layer. Cool to room temperature.
When fully cooled peel from the waxed paper or foil and cut into 24 (1-inch) squares. Wrap individually in parchment or waxed paper and store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Pumpkin Fudge

This is a great recipe that I found at allrecipes.com. It is made just like normal fudge except you use pumpkin instead of chocolate. I hope you enjoy!

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

3 cups white sugar
1 cup milk
3 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Butter or grease one 8x8 inch pan.

In a 3 quart saucepan, mix together sugar, milk, corn syrup, pumpkin and salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to medium and continue boiling. Do not stir.

When mixture registers 232 degrees F (110 degrees C) on candy thermometer, or forms a soft ball when dropped into cold water, remove pan from heat. Stir in pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, butter and nuts. Cool to lukewarm (110 degrees F or 43 degrees C on candy thermometer).

Beat mixture until it is very thick and loses some of its gloss. Quickly pour into a greased eight-inch pan. When firm cut into 36 squares.

*Helpful Hint*

This recipe takes about 2 hours or more to make, so be sure to leave enough time.

If you need to cool the fudge down quicker you can place it in a bowl of cold water, don't get your water too cold and stir while in the water.

Witches Hats

These have to be the easiest treats that I have posted thus far!! They would be a quick treat for your kid's after school or for any party.

What you need:

1 pkg chocolate covered cookies

1 pkg Hershey's kisses

camptorch or lighter

Lay your cookies out on a flat surface, such as a cookie sheet or plate. Take one Hershey kiss, melt the chocolate on the bottom and center on a cookie. The melted chocolate will set up and attach the kiss to the cookie.

*Helpful Hints*

I melted the kisses to attach from the cookies, but if you wanted to use frosting it would probably work it just doesn't set up quite as solid

In the picture above the "Witches Hat" is very simple and plain. It could be dressed up really easy by adding a frosting hat band or an assortment of other accessories.

What You Need

1 roll of sugar cookie dough or your favorite homemade sugar cookie recipe

1 medium-sized gingerbread boy cookie cutter

"Red Hots" candies or other round candies for eyes

canned vanilla frosting

white chocolate almond bark

Roll the cookie dough out on a lightly floured table. Cut out gingerbread boys and bake as directed. Remove cookies to cooling racks and set on counter to completely cool. Do not attempt to frost warm cookies; the frosting and almond bark will melt.

Frost the entire top of each cookie with the vanilla frosting. Using the "red hots", give each mummy 2 eyes.

Add three blocks of white almond bark to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring after each time until the almond bark is completely melted. Let sit on the counter for one to two minutes to cool and then spoon it into a plastic bag. Snip off the corner of the bag and then drizzle the chocolate over the mummy cookies to look like bandages. Allow to dry on cooling racks.

These cookies do not pack or store well once decorated. I suggest eating them the same day that they are frosted and decorated. You can make and bake the sugar cookies ahead of time and freeze them until ready to use. Just make sure that the cookies are completely thawed out before frosting.

*Helpful hints*

Another option you can choose besides almond bark could be white chocolate. Just be careful not to scorch the chocolate when you melt it.

Cupcake Pumpkin Patch

For those of you that have been watching my blog for a long time, you have probably seen these pumpkins before. These are some pumpkin cupcakes that I made for the Little Chickadee Preschool.

What you'll need:

12 cupcakes

24 mini cupcakes

frosting

Orange, Green, and Black food coloring

12 green chocolate chips

Divide frosting into 3 bowls and color the frosting in each bowl a different color. Frost the top of the large cupcakes with green frosting, and then tap the top and pull away multiple times to make the cupcakes look like grass.

Cut the tops off of the mini cupcakes and stick two tops together with a bit o' frosting. Frost with orange frosting to make pumpkins. Put one pumpkin on each of the large cupcakes. Place 1 green chocolate chip on top of each pumpkin to form stems.

Put black frosting in a ziplock bag and cut the corner. Use this to pipe the faces on the pumpkins.

I was trying to decide what treat I should show first and I decided the logical choice would be the first treat that I tried out for myself.

Candy Corn Cookies

No, these are not chocolate chip cookies with candy corns instead of chips, although that might be a good treat for another day, but back to this idea... These cookies are an easy and creative way to get Halloween flair without a ton of extra effort.

Ingredients:

1 batch of your favorite sugar cookie dough

(when I made these I used a Betty Crocker cookie mix, so whatever you want to use is great!)

Orange and Yellow food coloring

Take your cookie dough and divide it into three equal parts. Knead food coloring into dough as follows: leave one part plain, one part orange, and one part yellow.

Shape each part in about the same size square and then layer the orange first, then yellow, and then plain. Once the three colors are stacked form into a cube, wrap in plastic wrap, and put in the fridge until stiff (about 5 to 6 hours).

Slice in 1/2 inch pieces and then cut the square from corner to corner diagonally to make triangles. Bake according to recipe directions.

I have a friend that was asking me about cupcake stands, and I thought that I would share some pictures and ideas that I found on the internet. The picture above is actually cake covered in fondant that the cupcakes are sitting on. Although this is a cute idea most people that want to use cupcakes are doing it so they don't have to make big cakes.

The next picture is a great idea to make easy cupcake stands that you can customize to any occasion. These are just boxes or styrofoam that has been wrapped like a present with a ribbon wrapped around it. All you have to do is find wrapping paper that matches your occasion and you have a customized cupcake stand. I like these even more, cause you can reuse them just by wrapping new paper around them.

This last idea is an idea that I saw on a Food Network Cake Challenge last week. The chef had lots of cupcakes frosted simply with white frosting. He then used skewers to attach the cupcakes to foam layers between the other layers of cake. I think this would be a really neat idea, cause you could use any shape or size of foam and cover it with cupcakes. The only problem I can see with this is that it would take lots of time and lots of cupcakes.

1st Birthday Baby Block

I got a call a few months ago asking me to make a 1st birthday cake. After discussing the cake we decided that we would make a baby block with Pooh characters. This cake was lots of fun to make!!

On each side of the block is a different Pooh Character, including Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore. The inside of the cake is white cake with buttercream frosting.

Today is my Brother's 33rd birthday!! (Da da da... Hoppy Birfday...) His wife wanted to surprise him with a cake since they were going to be close for his birthday. The Old Ball 'N' Chain

Today was my sister's NINTH ANNIVERSARY so she decided that she would send her husband a Ball 'N' Chain cake at the police station where he works. His fellow co-workers made a big deal about how there was some new evidence that came in, so he was completely surprised!!

To make this cake they just made a 9x13 pan and baked a Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® cake mix (I had to throw that in since I got this idea from their website) and cut it into the sizes they wanted for their legos. For the bumps on the legos, they used large marshmallows cut in half!! How awesome of an idea is that?!?!? Then you just frost over all of it using your favorite frosting, and you are done!! Without even trying you have an adorable cake that is easy and fun!

Guitar Hero Challenge

I am always up for a challenge when I make cakes. Well, my sister decided that she was going to challenge me this weekend, but I think I did a pretty good job!

First some background... We went to my sister's house for Easter this weekend, and while we were there I was going to make one birthday cake for my nephew Macguire, my brother-in-law Mark, and my niece Lizzie. This is what they asked for:

Mark likes Guitar Hero

Maguire likes gadgets and things that move, so they wanted the cake to spin

Lizzie likes to play with CDs (to the dismay of her parents)

So, here is what I came with...

I made these awesome Guitar Hero guitars from fondant that I let dry and then painted with food-coloring.

Each person had their own CD on the cake with their name, their birthday, and a song title that "fit" the birthday they were having.

Wilton has just came out with a new line of products you use to make brownies! They have tons of fun flexible plans made especially to make bite-sized brownies in. They even have a new brownie idea book called Brownie Fun!The product I find the most useful, in this new line, is their bite-size brownie squares silicone mold. This product is great, because it bakes your brownies into bite size pieces already, so you just pull them out, instead of having to cut them. This might sound silly, but for those who are trying to make uniform treats for a party or get-together, this comes in handy.

When they first told Macy that is was her birthday soon, she started saying "Elmo Cake" all the time. For some reason she equated her birthday with an Elmo. I was only happy to ablige! Macy's mom actually baked this cake but I decorated it. The base is cream cheese frosting and the decorations are all store bought colored frosting. (Hence the bright colors)

But we had lots of fun!

d co-worker Ty Swensen passed from the world of the young to the world of the old. This poor man turned 40 today. Good thing that we found some way to

cheer him up in his time of despair....

Ok, really my boss Ty had his birthday today, and we wanted to make it extra "special" since it was his 40th birthday. Besides the black balloons, signs, and tombstone we decided to make him a cake. Now you must understand that it has become an unofficial tradition at my work that I make people a birthday cake that looks like their LEAST favorite thing. I know this sounds backwards but that is how it is. We always make the joke that Ty will not eat anything unless it once moved or came from something that moved. In lieu of this we decided to make him a lettuce cake.

This cake is a milk chocolate chocolate chip cake with chocolate ganache and fondant.

All the staff at Idaho Drug want to wish Ty a Very Merry Birthday, and hopefully the next 40 years will be just as great!

I made this Clock Cake for my co-worker on Wednesday. Elaine has worked at the drug store as long as I have been around the drug store. She collects clocks, so I thought that a clock cake would be Perfect!!

This is a Golden Vanilla Cake with Boysenberry frosting. The face of the clock is fondant and the numbers are painted on with food coloring.

For those of you who don't have the inside scoop about the mushroom saga that has gone on at my work for as long as I can remember, I will give you some background information.

I have a co-worker that absolutely hates mushrooms. Not only does she hate them, but I dare say that she LOATHES them completely!

We have been teasing her about it for years. We tell her not to eat things because they have mushrooms, or we tell people to add extra mushrooms to her order. Being the loving co-worker that I am I decided that it would be funny to continue the joke and make her a mushroom cake for her birthday.

Now, if you know Danita, you know that she has a catch phrase that she says about anything that she doesn't like when people bring it around.

Baby Shower Cake Ideas

There are a lot of different options for baby shower cakes. The very first thing that you need to consider is how many people you are going to feed. For example it would not be practical to make individual decorated cakes for everyone if you have fifty people to feed. At the same time you wouldn’t want to make a tiered cake or a half sheet cake if your group only has five people. Sandy Moyer, the editor of BellaOnline’s home cooking, gives the following information on the number of people certain cakes will feed.

The maximum number of servings per cake are -

8" or 9" round cake, single layer = 8 Servings
8" or 9" round cake, 2 layers = 12 to 16 servings
8" or 9" square cake, single layer = 9 servings
10" x 4" angel food or chiffon cake = 12 to 16 servings
12 cup Bundt cake = 12 to 16 servings
10" cheesecake (made in a spring form pan) = 12 to 16 servings
13" x 9" x 2" sheet cake = 12 to 16 servings
cake roll = about 12 - 1" slices
pound cake (made in a 10" loaf pan) = 10 to 12 servings

After you have decided what size of cake you want, you’ll need to decide what you want the cake to look like. It can be as simple as a 9x13 cake decorated with frosting (fig 1) to a 3D cake made of multiple cakes (fig 2).

The latest trend is to make individual cupcakes for each guest. This concept is really easy to execute and depending on how it is set up can look just as impressive as a three tier cake. I made the following cake (Fig 3) for a baby’s birthday, but the same idea would be very cute used at a baby shower.

For this party I made a cupcake for everyone. Then I also made a small 4 inch cake for the top. The family was having a big party for the baby the Saturday before her birthday, but they wanted to eat cake on her birthday also, so they kept the 4 inch cake and ate it on her birthday. This would be a fun idea for the siblings of the baby-to-be to feel included, even if they didn’t come to the baby shower. The cupcakes and cake are layered on pieces of foam wrapped in gift wrap, but it would work just as well to use boxes, cake stands, or anything else that would make a steady base for the cakes.

Be creative! Don’t think that you can’t have a great cake for the baby shower you are throwing. You can make one yourself or have someone make it for you, but the cake will be great!

This weekend we had my babies 1st birthday party, and this is the cake I made for her. This is a funfetti cake with buttercream icing. The butterflies and the baby on top are made out of fondant colored bright purples and yellows.

Elena's birthday actually isn't until tomorrow, so we ate the cupcakes and saved the very top cake to do a small party for her on her real birthday. This is a great idea if you family has a tradition of having one big and one small party. Or if you have a family party and a friends party.

The top cake alone will feed 10 to 15 people but with the cupcakes it will feed 30+.

Although I have done some catering for some pretty big events before, I had never actually done a wedding cake until this weekend. I was more than happy to this Cake for Camille and her fiance. They were both very nice and had a BEAUTIFUL wedding.

The top and bottom tiers of this cake are real cake, and the rest of the cake is styrofoam forms. The top layers is filled with chocolate ganache (mmm...tasty!) and the bottom layer is filled with raspberry filling. Each of the cakes are frosted with buttercream and then covered in fondant. A wide black ribbon is wrapped around the bottom to give them an elegant touch. Sometimes simple cakes can be the most elegant, and this is good proof.

For those of you Harry Potter fans out there, you will all remember in the 3rd book there is the Monster Book of Monsters that comes to life and tries to get Harry. Today was my sister's birthday, and the only thing that she likes better than Harry Potter is Twilight. Anyway... so I decided to make her the Monster Book of Monsters for her birthday this year.

This is a chocolate cake with chocolate ganache that is covered in fondant that has been colored brown and distressed with cocoa. Because of this lighting this picture doesn't quite do the texture justice, but you get the picture.

This week was absolutely crazy for me, when it comes to cakes. I did these cupcakes, a wedding cake, and my sister's birthday cake! I am still sane... barely!!

I did these cupcakes for the Rigby 8th Grade Grid-Kid Football team. They had a game this weekend, and their coach wanted to surprise them each with a cupcake with their number on it. These are yellow cake cupcakes with fondant footballs. It is always fun to do cupcakes for sport's teams, and I like to think that my cupcakes are lucky. There comes a time in every person's life where they reach the age that birthdays turn into death sentences rather than fun occasions. At this time it becomes more fun for family and friends to celebrate your birthday than you. Well, this week I got to make a cake for a lady's sister who reached this magical age.

This cake is a white cake with green buttercream frosting. The tombstone is made of rice crispies, and the "dirt" is smashed cookies.

I got to make a horse cake for a little boy for his 3rd birthday today! It was a lot of fun!! This cake is both a chocolate and a white cake with buttercream icing and fondant bridle and reigns. Having a fun COWBOY birthday is the perfect way to say "HEY I'M THREE!" So, Happy Birthday Jadin and I hope your cake made you as happy as it made me making it.

Our family had a big family party for the 4th of July, while we were there we had an UN-birthday party for all the grandkids, since we are rarely together when it is each of their birthdays. In order to make the cake special for all of them I made a little person for each grandkid.

My niece Jaklyn watches my kids for me all the time, so my little girl loves to go and see her. When we missed "Jackins" birthday my little girl was so sad, so we made her this giant cupcake! This is a chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream icing. It is decorated simply with sprinkles and some candles. "Happy Birthday Jackin!!" (as my little girl would say) even if it was late!

This is my little girl's 3rd Birthday Cake. She is my little princess, and she knows it!! She wanted a castle cake, that had lemon cake, and that was purple. It was a lot of fun making this cake for her. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELLA JEAN!! I LOVE YOU!!

Little Chickadee Preschool Graduation 2008

These cupcakes were a a lot of fun to make. They are lemon cupcakes with buttercream frosting, and I made one for each of the 11 kids that graduated this year. I also made sheet cakes with small chicken decorations for each piece.

The kid's teachers wanted to say Congratulations to all their little chickadees, and these cupcakes were the perfect way to make them feel extra special.

I had a teacher call me last week wanting me to make a UTAH JAZZ cake for one of her students. This is a 3 layer chocolate cake with buttercream icing.

To personalize it, I added a jersey with the little boys last name and age on it.

This birthday cake was a slam dunk!

We delivered our biggest order to date today. Our Stake Young Women's Presidency asked us to make 300 sugar cookies and 240 mini cupcakes for the General Young Women's Broadcast tonight. We gladly accepted (not knowing what we getting into), and after some late nights and a lot of work we filled the order.

The cookies we make are sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting, and thanks to Lisa they are wonderful!!

The cupcakes are chocolate cupcakes with brightly colored cream cheese frosting, and a fondant flower on top to make them springy!

This cake is actually a sugar-free white cake, with sugar-free frosting. It is a two cake mix cake.

Caution: If you buy candles that light each other, stand back, they REALLY will light each other! If you are more then twenty years old, it might not be safe to put ALL the candles on the cake. 55 candles on a cake are enough of a fire hazard without adding sparklers!

My niece Alessandria was having a Hannah Montana party, so she wanted a guitar cake for her birthday. Alessandria and her mom have celiac disease, so this cake is actually a gluten-free chocolate cake. The frosting is cream cheese frosting and mighty tasty!
